Creamy Mami is perhaps the quintessential Magical Girl (Majoko) story. It ran for a year on television, and was followed by several OAVs.

Morisawa Yuu is a somewhat dizzy ten year old girl, whose parents own a crepe stand ("Creamy Crepes"), in a town called Creamy-ga-Oka. One day, she's up in her room when something strange flies overhead. Being curious, she dons her crash helmet, puts on her rollerskates and eventually catches up with what looks like a huge, glass ship (which we later find out is called Feather Star). She meets a little elf-like creature called Pinopino who grants her, for a year, a magic item that allows her to transform into an older, purple-haired version of herself.

The next day, Yuu transforms herself (its a novel experience), and walks downtown with Nega and Poji, the two catlike creatures Pinopino had left behind to keep an eye on Yuu.

Meanwhile, a movie producer (well, he's got SOME kind of job in the entertainment industry) called Tachibana Shingo is in a real predicament. His main star (a singer called Megumi) is late - she's supposed to sing in front of an audience and is stuck in traffic. Yuu, walking down the street, is accosted by Tachibana and made to sing in front of the cameras. When asked her name, the only name she could think of at the time was the name of her parents' shop, so she calls herself "Creamy Mami".

Mami's career takes off very quickly, with television appearances and concerts taking place all the time. Mami usually shows up at the very last minute, probably giving Tachibana-san ulcers.

There are quite a few other characters in the show - a slightly older boy called Toshio, who Yuu has an eye on, but who is infatuated with Mami. There is also another boy called Midori, who likes Yuu. And then there is the singing star, Megumi, who is jealous of Mami (and who has a stormy relationship with Shingo).

Like all Magical Girl shows, this one is quite angst-ridden. If someone were to find out that Yuu was Mami, her magic wand to freeze to stone and she would be stuck as Mami. One thing leads to another, and Yuu finds herself leading a double life. And at the end of the year, she has to give back the magic items and say goodby to Mami forever.
